Riverside Planting to Cool Waters
The River Tirry meanders quietly through the Flow Country of Northern Scotland on its journey toward the Kyle of Sutherland. It is a special river that provides spawning and rearing habitat for Atlantic salmon and trout, but unsurprisingly warmer weather and a loss of tree cover means it is warming too much during hotter summers. This reduces the oxygen in the water making it difficult for its residents to survive. CAP clients have funded the planting of over 13,000 trees along similar rivers in the region in the past five years, but we want to plant more. Our partners at the Kyle of Sutherland Rivers Trust hope to get a locally sourced mix of alder, downy birch, willows, hazel, bird cherry, elm & aspen into the ground this winter 2026/2027. 1750 trees in total. THE NEED FOR COOL WATERS
Healthy rivers depend on a careful balance of light and shade. Sunlight supports the growth of aquatic plants and algae, but excessive warming can raise water temperatures, lower oxygen levels, and put cold-water species such as salmon and trout under increasing stress. Decades of woodland loss and intensive grazing have left many of Scotland's riverbanks exposed, while rising temperatures and prolonged dry spells are placing even greater pressure on these freshwater habitats.
BRINGING BACK SHADE
The answer is to restore trees to Scotland's riparian zones. Their canopy helps keep rivers cool, while fallen leaves fuel the food web that supports aquatic life. Woody debris creates pools, shelter and breeding habitat for fish and birds, and extensive root systems strengthen riverbanks, reducing erosion. Beyond the water's edge, these woodland corridors connect fragmented habitats, allowing wildlife to move more freely while providing food, cover and refuge.
